About Ordinary Equality:
ORDINARY EQUALITY is a forthcoming fully-illustrated book from Gibbs Smith by first-time author Kate Kelly & designer Nicole LaRue.
Alice Paul, suffragist, co-author & champion of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) once said, "I never doubted that equal rights was the right direction. Most reforms, most problems are complicated. But to me there is nothing complicated about ordinary equality." This book is the story of the fight to get women into the U.S. Constitution started BEFORE it was written in the 1700s & continues to this day.
Kate Kelly is a human rights attorney & activist who has been working on ERA ratification for a decade—both at the state & national level. Following the success of her acclaimed podcast named after Alice Paul's iconic quote, Kate set out to write a book by the same name—Ordinary Equality. This book is a fun, illustrated approach at telling the history of this vital amendment through the incredible lives of 12 different women & queer people. It provides a completely different view of the U.S. Constitution & how women were left out since the start (spoiler alert: it was intentional)!
It follows the fascinating & seldom-told stories of some of the female framers of our constitution:
—Molly Brant (Degonwadonti)
—Abigail Adams
—Phillis Wheatley
—Matilda Joslyn Gage
—Crystal Eastman
—Mary Church Terrell
—Alice Paul
—Pauli Murray
—Martha Wright Griffiths
—Patsy Takemoto Mink
—Barbara Jordan
—Pat Spearman, and many more!
